Tips Crib Mattress Shopping Tips
Foam or Innerspring?
Either is an acceptable choice. A modern, top-quality foam crib mattress (like those manufactured by Kolcraft) will maintain its shape and provide excellent support for your baby as well as an innerspring mattress, with normal use. Foam mattresses are generally much lighter than innerspring mattresses, suggesting easier sheet changing – although seeing as you are only lifting a corner at a time, this advantage seems only marginal. Innerspring mattresses remain the most popular – probably because that’s what Mom and Dad are used to sleeping on.
New or Used?
Buy a new crib mattress, if possible. This will assure that your baby will be protected by the latest in safety standards for flammability and will be sanitary. If you wish to use a previously used crib mattress, make some effort to assure that it was properly cared for and stored. Mold and bacteria can grow and fester on and within an improperly stored mattress that was not thoroughly cleaned before storage. Buy a new crib mattress for your first baby, and then use it for the rest.
Firmness?
Most babies will get used to sleeping on anything after a day or two. All Kolcraft crib mattresses are sufficiently firm to assure a safe sleeping environment for your baby. Experts seem to agree that, from a safety perspective, the firmer the better – but this is mainly to discourage the use of very soft mattresses that you will not find in modern crib mattresses from reputable manufacturers.
